3 out of 5 stars Great fun, but ultimately very limited.   October 22, 2008

This game is one that is so easy to pick up and play that you will feel like a master after only a few minutes. However, change the difficulty level and it soon becomes apparent that there is more to this game than simply tapping one button and moving your player across the court.

The main body of the game is made up of a "world tour mode" that sees your customised player competing in tournaments around the world. It also consists of numerous mini games which is as frustrating, as it is rewarding. The games consist of things such as hitting targets on the other side of the net, stopping "aliens" getting the net by hitting them, knocking barrels over etc etc. This is where you realise there is quite a lot more skill involved than it seems at first. The big problem with the mini games is that they soon become repetitive and quite boring. What would make them more interesting is if there was an on-line ranking system but this is not available n the playstation 3 version.

Overall I have mixed feelings for this game. Whilst it is great fun for half an hour whilst waiting for the pizza to arrive, there isn't enough of a challenge to keep coming back. At this price though (around 10) it is well worth purchasing. I am sure virtua tennis 4 will have on-line play and, if they keep the basic game play the same, then that would be an essential purchase. Number 3 is great fun but ultimately it just feels like a teaser for a much bigger game.

5 out of 5 stars Highly addictive realistic tennis game sim   April 8, 2008

This is as good as it gets if you're a tennis fan. Or if you have a any interest in the game! It's so much fun! I got this game yesterday and played it for hours - I couldn't put it down. First of all the players look amazingly lifelike. Daniel Handtuchova practically looks real! It was obviously marketed to fanboys and girls alike (For the guys we have Sharapova, Hingis, Hantuchova and Vadisova plus others) For the girls we have Nadal, Federer, Roddick ect...) You can play exhibition matches around the world and the announcer's voice will be in the local language (15 love ect...) You can enter a tournement, create a player and take on the world (train, rest, buy gear, get a coach ect...)or play doubles or against a friend. I had so much fun playing against Sharapova as Handtuchova yesterday in tournament mode. You can unlock things like new stadiums as you progress through the game. Highly recommended - the graphics are superb.

5 out of 5 stars best tennis game i've ever played   February 29, 2008

i've played a few tennis games over the years and was always frustrated by the lack of control your player had, leading to not beating the cpu much.
with this game, i'm totally blown away. the graphics are amazing, even on a normal tv. the players actually look like who they are meant to be, and they have the players characteristics, too, federer standing shaking his head when he loses a point, nadal motioning to his face, for a towel, and so on. you can play both as male or female, although i've so far only played as male, even though i'm female!
the gameplay is so good, i can actually return a serve, and i can beat the cpu. you get the chance to start your career, bottom of the rankings and build your way up, you have to train on all parts of your game, serves, volleys, footwork, etc, by way of mini games which are quite fun. if you train too hard, you can get injured, my poor player broke his leg! with these additional features, it's such an in depth game, i've not played any like it before, although i'm not sure if these features are part of other tennis games, they're not on the ones i've played.

the more you advance in your career, the more options become available to you, new clothes, racquets, tournaments, both singles and doubles, so there's always something to strive for.

i'm not sure why a review here compares this game to the xbox version, that's pointless, not everyone will have both an xbox and ps3, and this is a review of the ps3 version, not the xbox version, so why compare? very poor reviewer in my opinion. not everyone has capabilities to play games online and if that's what you are looking for, why bother actually buying a game that doesn't offer that, and then complain afterwards? it's your own fault for not reading the specifications!

i'd definitely recommend this game to anyone who has a PS3, it's a must have game. i'd even recommend it to anyone who has been let down by tennis games in the past.
