Product Description PLAYSTATION 3 already offers cutting-edge gaming and a High Definition Blu-ray Disc movie player, and soon you'll be able to watch, pause and record free-to-air digital television, thanks to PlayTV. It couldn't be easier to set up; simply plug a TV aerial into the back of the PlayTV Tuner, connect the PlayTV Tuner to your PS3 using a USB cable and then follow the on-screen instructions. And once you're up and running, you can record one channel while watching another or playing a PS3 game; see what's on now and next, with the easy to use Programme Guide; and watch TV when you're out and about, using Remote Play for PSP. In fact, you can enjoy all of PlayTV's great features on your PSP, whether you want to watch your recorded programmes or schedule new recordings. All you have to do is find a Wireless hotspot and activate the Remote Play feature. PlayTV is another reason to have PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP at the centre of your living room, and it's coming soon.

best freeview ive had. January 2, 2009 Mr. D. L. Watts (cornwal uk) im enjoying using play tv a lot. Having a young baby the pause comes in really handy when he cry's at night. the pictures great and it records brilliantly. Hopefully after more updates, the series link will be up and working the only thing this pvr lacks. You can also transfer the tv files and watch them on your laptop. After adding a 320 gb disk drive (only 60) ive all the space i could need. I put the spare 80gb drive in an enclosure and use it as an external drive for my laptop. you need swissknife a free utility to format the drive for it to be recognized, so you can use it. If that makes sense.
Must have if you own a PS3 December 25, 2008 funkymothers (London, U.K.) PlayTV is a must have if you own a PS3. It works brilliantly and the set up is a doddle. The freeview interface is well laid out and certainly better than my Toshiba's inbuilt tuner. The software works well and it is rock solid. I can honesty say that with my PS3 networked to my Mac and Medialink serving photos, videos and my entire iTunes library to the PS3, PlayTV has been the missing link to turn it into a (hate to use the word) "home entertainment hub" If you get an alert telling you that an update for the PlayTV software is available here's where to look: Settings > About > Update this game.
If you have a PS3 buy this December 15, 2008 Mark Johnston (Scottish Borders) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am one of those people who think that SKY+ is not worth the money. If like me you can only watch football on the telly for 20mins before getting bored then why would you want to pay 40+ each month to watch a bunch of overpaid footballers behaving like children and being poor role models for our kids...anyway back to PlayTV! This little box, and I do mean little is absolutely fantastic, very simple to set up. Take your aerial cable out of the telly and plug it into the PlayTV box, plug the USB cable (supplied) into the box and the other end into the PS3, turn the PS3 on, turn the Telly on and switch to the channel you use for PS3, insert the PlayTV disc and follow the on screen instructions. Once the box has scanned and stored available channels (about 3minutes)you can use it. The menu system is simple to use. The main options are watch tv, look at the programme planner, review your library of recorded programmes, look at your schedule of programmes to be recorded, manual record and settings. Each selection is simple to drill through and functions can be accessed using a variety of methods so you never feel the software is being awkward and not speaking your language. The 7 day programme guide is very similar to Sky but a different colour and no annoying music. Once you find a programme to watch you select it and you are given the option of watching or recording, if you select record you can adjust the recording timings or just use the scheduled times, set to repeat recording daily/weekly and specify the number of repeat recordings so you could record a series. Some reveiwers commented on not being able to do these functions so either I got lucky or the software has been updated. Helpfully when you go back to the planner the programme set to be recorded is shaded in red as is the time should you flick through several pages. You can watch TV, play a game or watch a DVD/Blu-Ray film and the system will tell you when it is recording or finished with a helpful flash up message in the corner of the screen. Live TV can be paused, rewound. Basically this is great piece of kit, the picture quality is excellent, the price is great (Amazon 49) and best of all, no monthly subscription. I would recommend you also buy a Sony Blu-Ray remote controller as PlayTV comes with an overlay to stick on the remote. You can use the PS3 Sixaxis controller but the Blu-Ray remote makes it easier and it makes watching Blu-Ray/DVD easier. Even buying the two is less than 100 which is cheaper than buying a seperate recorder. When you combine PlayTV with the PS3 (80gb) it really makes the value and use of the PS3 apparent and it quickly becomes clear you now have an all in one next gen media entertainment system. Go buy...
Top notch add on, well worth the new discounted price December 6, 2008 Mr. Lee Shenton (Flintshire, Wales) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
When I heard about Play tv I was very excited about the idea. I already get freeview through my tv, but had no facility to record programmes etc. I must say I was very impressed with the lightning quick set up, took no longer than 5 minutes to set up and find all of the available channels. Ignore the boo boys who complain about 3 button presses before the tv comes on (bunch of whingers who want everything yesterday!), surely it's more important to note the key features. I'll never miss MOTD or heroes ever again with it's excellent recording mode. Simply keep your PS3 in standby mode when a programme is ready to record, and it will switch itself on and start recording! It will even tun itself off when it's finished! A life saver, and since the latest firmware updated the channels populate far quicker than when I first bought it. Very much recommended.
Play TV November 28, 2008 T. Hammond (London) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The unit arrived from Amazon quite quickly. Play TV set-up is very straight forward. SCEE even provide a DVD to guide you through installation (but in all honesty you don't need it). Once up and running you get a `Play TV' icon on your PS3 menu system. Once Play TV is selected you get another rotating menu system that allows you to control everything from selecting TV to choosing a channel (EPG) right through to managing recordings. I love SCEE menus and find them quite intuitive. The EPG is very good but not excellent like Sky. Once Play TV is running there are a number of informative icons that make navigation with the BD remote a breeze. SCEE even provide a TV cover for the BD remote (not that you really need it). In all honesty you only use a few buttons on a BD remote and mainly the big round one. My only gripe about the BD remote though is the size of the channel buttons (way too small). I have a 1080i TV with built in Freeview. I decided to buy the Play TV and plug in the aerial (thereby losing the Freeview on my TV and relying on the PS3 for Freeview). I have to say I am disappointed with the picture quality of the PS3 Freeview. The picture quality is a lot worse than the built in Freeview. I can't understand why. The only way to describe it is like comparing High Definition with Standard Definition. I feel short changed! The picture is really grainy and the wife has insisted we revert back to built in Freeview TV until I come up with a solution to make the picture better. I've tried everything available in PS3 menus. No luck. Good points: There are some(!) notably the speed of the EPG and selecting the red button (top right of Freeview screens) is instant. I like the fact that when a channel is selected you get a brief description about the programme and it is very easy to record. You can pause TV, rewind (if you have the option on to start with). All in all quite good. Bad points: Firmware updates. Play TV tells you that there is an update - but finding it is not intuitive enough (why can't it be automatic like normal PS3 updates). To find it select > settings > about (it's in there near the bottom). My first recording (Charlie and Lola) did not work. There was a time overlap apparently (error recording). This is something Sky does well and compensates earlier time starts, or if a programme goes on longer. There is a way round it (a pain) and with Play TV on you have to edit start and end times (which kind of defeats the object in the first place and uses valuable disc space). Recordings take up a lot of space so if you have a lot of game saves (MGS, COD, Home) do not expect many recordings. I am using Play TV as a dedicated Freeview box. It is a real bind (in the mornings!) turning the PS3 on.. waiting for the PS3 to load up... locate Play TV... select Play TV.... Wait.... select TV when Play TV is running... all a bit of a chore (wife hates this as well). Why can't my BD remote have a big button on it that does all this for me! Last up there is no series link so if you wanted to record a week's worth of Eastenders - to do this you have to go into each day and do it manually (and adjust times just in case).
