Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is a next-gen experience complete with top-of-the-line graphics and surround sound designed for the Sony PlayStation 3. Featuring the most revealing display of Kojima Production's premier title, MSG4 details the world where Snake must under go his final mission. In a world overrun by private military companies (PMCs), wars are no longer fought over nations or ideologies. Instead, the wars of the future are micro-managed by overarching PMCs, right down to the bullet. New gadgets and abilities fuel Snake's journey deep into the enemy domains of the Middle East, South America, and beyond. New gear includes "Metal Gear Mk. II," the ultimate reconnaissance tool, and "Solid Eye," which gives Snake real-time information on enemies and his surroundings.

Joined by a familiar cast of characters, Snake must once again return to the battlefield to confront his lifelong rival, Liquid Ocelot, who is manipulating the world's wars from the one world where soldiers will always have a place. But Liquid Ocelot is not the only one who will be able to manipulate the world's wars--Snake can destabilize opposing forces by working behind the scenes, supporting the local militia as they fight PMCs, creating a smokescreen that allows Snake to move freely within the war-zone.

MGS4 is a next-generation adventure set in the aftermath of MGS2: Sons of Liberty. The concept behind the latest Metal Gear Solid project is "no place to hide," and this edition in the series will force Snake into unexpected circumstances with an all-new storyline that breaks away in some ways from the previous MGS franchise entries. We don't want to spoil it for you, but, producer Hideo Kojima did reveal some very juicy bits about the game and the storyline when it was first announced at E3 of 2006. "Until now," said Kojima, "we've released two entries of the MSX2 Metal Gear series, and three entries in the Metal Gear Solid series. Add to this Portable Ops, and you get a total of six titles. All mysteries will be cleared up in Metal Gear Solid 4."

Kojima was very clear about the finality of MSG4, leaving gamers to wonder, "Will Snake die?!" When asked if the story will come to this sort of an end, Kojima responded without the slightest bit of vagueness, "It will come to an end." The MGS4 E3 trailer showed a number of characters from the Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid histories. This final instalment is sure to deliver loads of cameos, in fact, it is rumoured that nearly all the characters from the series will make an appearance.

In addition to a return of classic Metal Gear Solid characters, the gameplay systems from part three are also expected to make a comeback. The camouflage system from part three will make it into MGS4, with the addition of "OctoCamo," Snake's most advanced stealth suit to date. The name appears to be formed from the words "Octopus" and "camouflage," and players will be awestruck by the chameleon-like camo that changes with the surroundings. OctoCamo allows Snake to blend in with his environment as it digitally manifests nearby textures in real time. Think if it this way, if Snake is standing next to a wall worn out with holes, he too will appear to be riddled with holes. It has also been revealed that MGS4 will have online play, but no specifics have been released. Although very little information is known about the game's visuals, rumour has it that MGS4 is expected to be the finest representation of console graphics on the PS3, and it is expected that they will just get better and better as the game nears its release date.

5 out of 5 stars No question about it!   January 5, 2009

This is one of the most epic games ever made. It's difficult to explain in writing because you really have to play it to see for yourself. This is the REAL Game of the Year 2008. GTA4 was way over rated in my opinion (still a fantastic game though), and games like Halo or Gears of War will never be masterpieces like this. I know what they're like, I've played them. MGS4 allows you to lose yourself in another person's world. Play it and you will know what I'm talking about.

5 out of 5 stars It's the end of a Legend.   January 3, 2009

Metal Gear Solid 4 is the most amazing blockbuster game ever made. Forget you're halo's and Gears of war's. This game is one of the main reason to buy a PS3. This game has touched me in so many ways. From the start to the grpping ending, this game closes the final MGS game with Snake, with a bang. If you are a fan of MGS, and you don't play this game, then you are missing out on the grestest gaming materpiece of our time. Do yourself a favour, buy this game!

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing   January 3, 2009

I love the metal gear games so was so excited to play this, which is what pushed me to buy a ps3 to be honest but i was sooooo bored. I love storylines in games but these were just too slow and long. Even the story itself was nto inspiring just a load of waffle that nearly ruined mgs2 for me. he goes a bit too over the top with the story, all too confusing which takes the love of the game away. im afraid ive lost a bit of love with the series due to this game. its no longer a neat, cool game but a confusing tedious bore. hideo kojima must desperately want to be a director but lets hope he does not get to make any films as it will prob be a waste of money and time. there are lots of great points to the gameplay but the levels are too short. it looks great but i loved the playing style of its prequels and sequels??? mgs2 was verging on annoying with the storyline but this tops it hands down. glad i just fisnished it cos i can sell it on now cos i wont be playing it agian thats for sure. ONE LAST POINT: i wish there was a feature where you could play as different characters like ninja from mgs1. but as for mgs4: thank god it over.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Game On Any Console.   December 30, 2008
Jamie Mccutcheon (Larkhall, Scotland)
Metal Gear Solid 4 is the perfect example of Quality over Quantity. It took me 19 hours to complete this game. Which compared to GTAs 45 hours or Oblivions 120 hours+ of gameplay may seem a tad inadequate. But id rather play this game than either of the other two.

Im not going to reveal any plotlines at all. Just know this, MGS4 is the most epic game ive ever played. There are so many mindblowing moments in this game its scary. The story is absolutely amazing. The gameplay is superb and the graphics in the outstanding cutscenes are hard to tell apart from actual gameplay.

Buy this game. Lock your door and put up a Do Not Disturb sign on your handle and get ready for a gaming experience you will never forget.

2 out of 5 stars Completely... Utterly... Over-rated...   December 29, 2008

I try to refrain from being negative in my reviews, but I'm completely powerless this time round. I can't believe the amount of over-hyped reviews on this product page, it's laughable. And coincidentally enough, they're all either the earliest reviews, or from people who still cry at video games because it's so "epic" (Yes - I've read a number of guys crying at the end of the game...)

This is as far removed from the previous 3 games as Pong is to Gran Turismo. The stealth element has been removed, which for me has taken the best formula out of the originals in the first place. It's just a series of killing bad guys - get ammo - cut scene - run to another place - cut scene - kill a bit more - cut scene... I paid for a game not a film. Some scenes even stretch over 20 minutes long! I had more fun watching my cat lick 'itself' than an ageing Solid Snake gravelling on and on, and the camera making you dizzy.

The camera angle during gamepley is ridiculous too, which has changed due to the low stealth input. This also has an affect on the controls which aren't very logical. The shoot button is R1 instead of an easier to press X or O, and the least said about the Right Analogue Stick for camera movement the better...

So you've completed the single player mode, and practically burned out your HDD with tiresome installs on the way... Now what do you do? Well theirs always the Online Metal Gear Mode, which sounds pretty tasty. If only it were though.

You have initial set-up screens to give your character (one which you play online with) an identity which is pretty nice, though gets a bit much when you even have to choose a pathetic American accent so you can shout "Go!" and any other patriotic speech bubble available.

The lobby where you select a game sorted by difficulty level is already flawed in itself. Because all the dweebs and 'hard-core' all night gamers even go onto the lower ranked levels, meaning light players like myself are constantly subjected to sniper-deaths every few seconds, and even team-mates deciding to just kill you; most likely to channel some aggression.

I'm not criticising the game based on my skill level. I'm not ashamed to admit I enjoy playing games on an amateur level, so lets say we choose a mid-ranged Level in the lobby. You could still be waiting up to 20 minutes just for the server to find players! Choose the Top Level, Snake, and you'll be away in seconds.

As far as I'm concerned, Metal Gear 2 was the stand-out game in the series - a perfect blend of logic and fun, though sadly, thanks to Sony cutting costs on the PS3, will now remain on the PS2. I understand a select group of people will defend this game with their lives and most likely do the new trend of Copy & Pasting a quote, then hitting back with a smart remark. But hey, you have to be critical when so many reviews could lead people to disillusionment. This game is no different to Call of Duty or any other patriotic shoot-em-up rubbish.
